What is Nizral (Ketoconazole) used for?

Nizral (Ketoconazole) is an oral antifungal medication used to treat patients suffering from fungal infections of the hair, skin, or mucous membranes. It operates by destroying or stopping the reproduction of fungal cells allowing the immune system to destroy the infection naturally. It is commonly used to treat conditions such as vaginal thrush, folliculitis, skin infections, mucous membrane infections, or throat infections. Your physician may also prescribe it for other unlisted conditions, as well.

How should I use Nizral (Ketoconazole)?

Nizral (Ketoconazole) is normally prescribed to be taken once daily at a dosage of one tablet, but your individual instructions will be determined by your physician based on the condition being treated, your current health, and the severity of your symptoms. These should be swallowed whole and unaltered with a large glass of water. Do not crush, split, or chew the tablets prior to use as this may destroy or alter the effects of their contents. Ask your physician any questions you have about the medicine to ensure the correct usage.

What are the side effects of Nizral (Ketoconazole)?

The use of Nizral (Ketoconazole) may cause side effects in some patients such as:

  • Headaches
  • Dizziness
  • Mild nausea or vomiting
  • Mild skin rash or itchiness
  • Swelling of the breasts
  • Impotence or loss of sex drive

More serious side effects that may occur requiring emergency medical attention are dizziness, faintness, numbness or tingling, sensitive skin, depression, anxiety, darkened urine, discolored stools, or jaundice. Inform your physician as soon as you experience any unusual or severe symptoms to make sure the correct changes are made to your dosage or application frequency to prevent further problems from appearing.

Please Note

Do not begin using Nizral (Ketoconazole) if you are breastfeeding, lactose intolerant, allergic to imidazole antifungals, if the patient is a child under fifteen kilograms, or if you have porphyrias or liver disease. It is also important to disclose if you have underactive adrenal glands, abnormal liver test results, or if you have previously experienced side effects on the liver caused by other medications. These conditions may require reduced dosages or other adjustments to your regimen to prevent further complications from occurring.

Strictly follow all instructions provided to you by your physician or pharmacist while using Nizral (Ketoconazole). Optimum and safe dosage can differ based on the patient and the condition being treated.

As this medication may be unsafe for certain patients, it is essential you always inform your physician if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, as well as if you have any allergies, other illnesses, or ongoing health conditions, and if you are taking any other form of medication, supplements, or herbal products.

Immediately seek emergency medical care if you have an allergic or hypersensitive reaction. Common signs of a reaction include hives, swelling, skin rashes, chest pains, as well as trouble breathing or swallowing.
