What is Reglan (Metoclopramide) used for?

Reglan (Metoclopramide) is an oral medication prescribed as a short-term treatment for adults with gastroesophageal reflux or to prevent nausea and vomiting caused by anti-cancer chemotherapy or surgery. It operates by increasing muscle contractions in the upper digestive tract to speed the rate at which food moves through the digestive system. Your physician may also prescribe it for other unlisted purposes.

How should I use Reglan (Metoclopramide)?

Reglan (Metoclopramide) should always be taken according to your physician's instructions to get the most effective results from treatment. One tablet is normally taken two to four times each day, but your individual instructions will depend on your health condition and the severity of your symptoms. These should be swallowed with a full cup of water on an empty stomach to aid absorption. Avoid altering the form of the tablets by crushing or splitting the tablets as this may destroy or alter the effects of their contents. Ask your pharmacist or physician any questions you have about the medicine to ensure the correct usage.

What are the side effects of Reglan (Metoclopramide)?

Side effects that may occur in some patients using Reglan (Metoclopramide) include:

  • Headaches
  • Drowsiness
  • Vomiting or diarrhea
  • Anxiety or insomnia
  • Increased urination
  • Tenderness or swelling of the breast area
  • Disturbed menstrual periods

Serious side effects that may require emergency medical attention are unusual swelling, tremors, stiff muscles, fever, flu symptoms, hallucinations, seizures, or jaundice. Contact your physician as soon as you experience any worrying or intense symptoms to make sure any necessary adjustments are made to your dosage to prevent further health problems from occurring.

Please Note

Reglan (Metoclopramide) should not be used to treat patients who are lactose intolerant or who have epilepsy, gastrointestinal hemorrhage, intestinal blockage, gastrointestinal perforation, or a tumor affecting the adrenal gland. Also inform your physician if you are taking antipsychotic medications or have a history of atopic allergies such as eczema, porphyrias, Parkinson's disease, severely decreased kidney function, or severely decreased liver function. These conditions may cause complications during treatment requiring special adjustments to your treatment.

Strictly follow all instructions provided to you by your physician or pharmacist while using Reglan (Metoclopramide). Optimum and safe dosage can differ based on the patient and the condition being treated.

As this medication may be unsafe for certain patients, it is essential you always inform your physician if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, as well as if you have any allergies, other illnesses, or ongoing health conditions, and if you are taking any other form of medication, supplements, or herbal products.

Immediately seek emergency medical care if you have an allergic or hypersensitive reaction. Common signs of a reaction include hives, swelling, skin rashes, chest pains, as well as trouble breathing or swallowing.
