What is Pantoprazole Actavis (Pantoprazole Sodium Sesquihydrate) used for?

Pantoprazole Actavis is proton pump inhibitor. It is used as a treatment in patients suffering from for acid refulx (reflux disease), ulcers in the stomach or dudenum ulcers, and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. Pantoprazole Actavis reduces the amount of acid in the stomach which is a contributing factor to each of these conditions.

Hydrochloric acid is produced in the stomach by the parietal cells. In certain conditions such as acid reflux, stomac ulcers or Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, the amount of acid producted is too high and can lead to complications. Pantoprazole Actavis inhibits the proton pumps in the parietal cells that are responsible for the production of hydrochloric acid.

How should I use Pantoprazole Actavis (Pantoprazole Sodium Sesquihydrate)?

Your doctor will prescribe a different dose of Pantoprazole Actavis depending on tyour condition. The following are general starting dosages:

  • For acid reflex: take one tablet a day, for 4 to 8 weeks. In some cases you may need to take two tablets per day./li>
  • For stomach or duodenal ulcers: take one tablet a day. For stomach ulcers you will need to do so for 4 to 8 weeks. For duodenal ulcers you will need to do so for 2 to 4 weeks.
  • For Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome: take two tablets daily. Sometimes you may need to take two tablets twice a day.

Swallow a Pantoprazole Actavis tablet whole with a glass of water around an hour before eating a meal.

What are the side effects of Pantoprazole Actavis (Pantoprazole Sodium Sesquihydrate)?

Mild, temporary side effects may be experienced when taking Pantoprazole Actavis. If they contnue for an extended period or they are bothering you, countact your doctor. The most common side effects are headaches and gastrointestinal disorders (nausea, stomach pain, excessing gas, vomiting or diarrhea).

Any of the side effects listed below are more problematic as the may suggest an intolerance to this product. You should contact your doctor if you notice any of the following side effects:

  • excessive or unusual tiredness or weakness
  • jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes)
  • Skin problems (itchiness; rash; swelling, blistering or peeling of the skin)
  • sweeling in of the face, lips, tongue or throat
  • fever or infection
  • chest pain
  • shortness of breath
  • hypertension (high blood pressure)
  • swelling of the legs
  • excessive bleeding or bruising
  • depression, anxiety or other mental disorders

Please Note

If you are allergic to Pantoprazole Actavis or have had a bad reaction to beta blockers in the past, you should not take these tablets. The list of excipients in these tablets is sodium carbonate, anhydrous, mannitol, sodium starch glycollate (Type A), methacrylic acid, copolymer, calcium stearate, hypromellose, titanium dioxide, purified talc, macrogol 400, sodium lauryl sulfate or Kollicoat MAE 30 DP dark yellow - do not take Pantoprozaole Actavis if you are allergic to any of these.

Pantoprazole Acyavis is not a suitable treatment for anyone who ha had liver problems, including cirrhosis of the liver.

If you are taking any prescription or non-prescription drugs, herbal treatments, or supplements make sure to tell your doctor as these could have an interaction with Pantoprazole Actavis.

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, trying to become pregnant, or breast-feeding.
