What is Dapsone (Dapsone) used for?

Dapsone (Dapsone) is an oral antibiotic prescribed to treat patients suffering from dermatitis herpetiformis or leprosy. The medication slows or prevents the reproduction of bacteria cells allowing the immune system to control the infection. It may also be prescribed to treat pneumonia affecting patients with an underactive immune system caused by conditions such as AIDS or HIV. Your physician may prescribe it for other unlisted purposes, as well.

How should I use Dapsone (Dapsone)?

Dapsone (Dapsone) should always be used according to your physician's instructions to ensure the safest and most effective results from treatment. One tablet is typically taken once each day, but your individual directions will depend on the condition being treated, your current health, and the severity of your symptoms. These should be swallowed with a full cup of water and may be taken with or without food, but a snack or meal is recommended before use if you experience nausea. Never split, chew, or crush the tablets before use as this may destroy or change the effects of their contents. Ask your pharmacist or physician any questions you have about the medicine to ensure the correct administration.

What are the side effects of Dapsone (Dapsone)?

Side effects that may occur during the use of Dapsone (Dapsone) include:

  • Headaches
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Blurry vision
  • Insomnia
  • Increased sensitivity of the skin to sunlight
  • Tinnitus (Ringing in the ears)

Serious side effects that may require emergency medical attention are muscle fatigue, numbness, tingling sensations, blue tint to the skin, trouble breathing, chest pain, severe fatigue, signs of an allergic reaction, discolored stools, or darkened urine. These conditions may require lower doses or reduced application frequency to prevent more complications from appearing.

Please Note

Do not begin using Dapsone (Dapsone) if you are lactose intolerant, allergic to sulphonamide antibiotics, if you have a severe G6PD deficiency, porphyrias, or severe anemia. Also inform your physician if you have anemia, mild G6PD deficiency, lung disease, or heart disease as these conditions may result in unexpected problems requiring special alterations to your regimen.

Strictly follow all instructions provided to you by your physician or pharmacist while using Dapsone (Dapsone). Optimum and safe dosage can differ based on the patient and the condition being treated.

As this medication may be unsafe for certain patients, it is essential you always inform your physician if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, as well as if you have any allergies, other illnesses, or ongoing health conditions, and if you are taking any other form of medication, supplements, or herbal products.

Immediately seek emergency medical care if you have an allergic or hypersensitive reaction. Common signs of a reaction include hives, swelling, skin rashes, chest pains, as well as trouble breathing or swallowing.
