What is Derma-Vet Ointment (Nystatin/Neomycin Sulfate/Thiostrepton/Triamcinolone Acetonide) used for?

Derma-Vet ointment contains four different active ingredients (nystatin, neomycin sulfate, thiostrepton, and triamcinolone acetonide) which allows it to work on four different therapeutic levels (anti-inflammatory, antipruritic, antibacterial and antifungal). Derma-Vet is indicated in the treatment of many different cutaneous disorders in cats and dogs including otitis (ear infections), interdigital cysts, anal gland infections (dogs only) and dermatologic disorders including eczematous dermatitis, contact dermatitis, seborrheic dermatitis and dermatitis resulting from parasitic infestation.

How should I use Derma-Vet Ointment (Nystatin/Neomycin Sulfate/Thiostrepton/Triamcinolone Acetonide)?

Some ailments may require frequent application (two or three times daily) while others will require less frequent application.

Otitis: clean any cerumen or foreign matter out of the ear canal before dropping 3 to 5 drops of Derma-Vet Ointment into the canal.

Infected anal glands or cystic areas: completely drain the gland or cyst before filling with Derma-Vet Ointment.

Dermatitis or other dermatologic disorders: clean the area thoroughly before sparingly applying Derma-Vet Ointment in a thin coat to the affected area.

Always wear gloves while applying Derma-Vet ointment. Make sure to wash your hands thoroughly after applying Derma-Vet Ointment.

What are the side effects of Derma-Vet Ointment (Nystatin/Neomycin Sulfate/Thiostrepton/Triamcinolone Acetonide)?

Most dogs and cats react well to topical application of Derma-Vet Ointment. In some cases a sensitivity to neomycin has been reported. This may result in swelling, redness, itchiness, irritation of the skin. Vomiting and diarrhea may occur during treatment. Hearing loss has been reported in some cases of treatment of otitis, however this usually regresses after treatment has stopped.

If you notice any unwanted side effects while taking Derma-Vet Ointment, contact your veterinarian.
