What is Procur (Cyproterone Acetate) used for?

Procur Tablets contain 50mg of Cyproterone Acetate is a an anti-androgen that blocks the effects of male sex hormones. It can be used to treat unoperable prostate cancer, hirsutism in women, and to decrease libido when required in adult males. It can also be used aspart of a transgender hormone therapy.

Procur (Cyproterone Acetate), an antiandrogen, works by blocking the action of androgens (male sex hormones like testosterone) in cells containing androgen receptors. It slows production of male hormones in the testes, and by inhibits ovarian function in females.

How should I use Procur (Cyproterone Acetate)?

Procur is usually taken daily by men. Women take it on certain days in time with their menstrual cycle. Different dosage will be prescribed for different conditions being treated. Take only the dosage advised by your doctor for your condition.

As a guideline, dosages are often in the range of:

  • 50mg - 300mg daily to treat prostate cancer in males
  • 50mg twice daily to reduce excessing sex drive in males
  • 100mg per day from Day 1 to Day 10 of the menstrual cycle (taken in conjuction with a contraceptive pill) to reduce hirsutism in women.

What are the side effects of Procur (Cyproterone Acetate)?

Procur is well tolerated by most people who take it.

The following are more common side effects. If any of these become troublesome or do not go away, contact your doctor.

  • tiredness or weakness
  • depresssion
  • temporary inner restlessness
  • changes in body weight

The following list of side effects could suggest a more serious problem. Contact your doctor immediately if you notice:

  • stomach discomfort or pain
  • shortness of breath
  • yellow skin and/or eyes (jaundice)
  • dark coloured urine
  • persistent or recurrent bleeding occurring at irregular intervals

Please Note

Cyproterone Acetate may not be the best choice of treatment:

  • if you are pregnant, trying to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
  • if you have any form of liver disease
  • if you have jaundice or have had it in the past
  • if you have herpes or have had it in the past
  • if you have suffered depression or other mental illness
  • if you have experienced blood clots
  • if you suffer from diabetes
  • if you have an abnormal red blood cell count
