What is Cytomid (Flutamide) used for?

Cytomid (Flutamide) is an oral antiandrogen medication prescribed to treat men with prostate cancer. It operates by preventing the action of male hormones as these are associated with the growth and spread of cancer cells. The medication may be used along with other procedures or medicines to cure your condition. Your physician may prescribe it to treat other unlisted conditions, as well.

How should I use Cytomid (Flutamide)?

Always follow your physician's instructions while using Cytomid (Flutamide) to get the safest and most effective results from treatment. One tablet is normally administered three times each day, but your particular instructions may differ depending on your health condition and the severity of your symptoms. Swallow these doses with a large glass of water. They may be taken with or without food, but a meal or snack is recommended prior to use if you experience nausea. Do not change the form of the tablets by splitting or crushing them prior to use as this may destroy or alter the effects of their contents. Ask your physician any questions you have about using the medication to ensure the correct administration.

What are the side effects of Cytomid (Flutamide)?

Some patients using Cytomid (Flutamide) have reported experiencing side effects such as:

  • Diarrhea
  • Hot flashes
  • Increased sensitivity to sunlight
  • Skin rash
  • Greenish or amber tinted urine
  • Bloody urine
  • Rectal inflammation or bleeding
  • Swelling or pain of the breast area
  • Decreased sex drive, impotence, or lowered sperm count

More serious side effects that may require emergency medical attention are nausea, vomiting, severe fatigue, abdominal pain, flu symptoms, discolored stools, jaundice, or signs of an allergic reaction such as swelling, hives, or trouble breathing. Immediately inform your physician about any symptoms that are intense or worrying to make sure the correct changes are made to your regimen to prevent further complications from occurring.

Please Note

Cytomid (Flutamide) should not be used to treat women, children, or patients with porphyrias. Also disclose if you have a G6PD deficiency, heart disease, decreased kidney function, or decreased liver function as these conditions may cause unexpected complications during treatment requiring adjustments to your dosage or frequency of administration.

Strictly follow all instructions provided to you by your physician or pharmacist while using Cytomid (Flutamide). Optimum and safe dosage can differ based on the patient and the condition being treated.

As this medication may be unsafe for certain patients, it is essential you always inform your physician if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, as well as if you have any allergies, other illnesses, or ongoing health conditions, and if you are taking any other form of medication, supplements, or herbal products.

Immediately seek emergency medical care if you have an allergic or hypersensitive reaction. Common signs of a reaction include hives, swelling, skin rashes, chest pains, as well as trouble breathing or swallowing.
