What is Escitalopram (Escitalopram Oxalate) used for?

Escitalopram is a type of SSRI medicine used for major depressive episodes in patients with depression, generalised anxiety disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, panic disorder, social anxiety disorder and other conditions. Its mode of administration involves acting on the serotonin system in the brain and raising the serotonin levels.

How should I use Escitalopram (Escitalopram Oxalate)?

Escitalopram is supplied in the form of 10mg and 20mg tablets for oral administration. After a medical consultation, your doctor will be able to determine the correct dosage. Some patients treating anxiety have been directed by their doctor to begin treatment with 10mg taken once per day. The tablet may be taken in the morning or evening. If the prescribing doctor deems it necessary, the dosage may be increased after a week and the patient will be told to take 20mg per day.

Adult patients with depression might also be directed to begin treatment with a dosage of 10mg per day, which the doctor providing treatment may increase to 20mg per day after 3 weeks of treatment. However, it is important to note that the required dosage often differs for each individual. Because of this you must only take the amount of medicine that your doctor tells you to take. Sudden cessation of medical treatment could trigger withdrawal symptoms. Your doctor may taper your dosage in order to prevent this.

What are the side effects of Escitalopram (Escitalopram Oxalate)?

Treatment of major depressive disorder or any other conditions with Escitalopram may cause some side effects, including:

  • Myalgia
  • Sinusitis
  • Weight gain
  • Sweating more than usual
  • Delayed ejaculation or other sexual function problems

Inform your doctor of any side effects that occur. Although it is not considered to be common, some serious side effects may occur. You must immediately see your doctor if you experience muscle rigidity, hallucinations, seizures or any other severe reactions which have not been mentioned here.

Please Note

Antidepressant medications are associated with an increased risk of suicidal thoughts in a small number of people who take them. It is necessary to discuss all of the risks of treatment with your doctor before beginning treatment.

Patients will need to stop treatment if any seizures occur. A doctor should also be consulted as soon as possible if this happens.

Seek immediate emergency medical attention if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms to watch for, which may be indicative of a reaction, include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or limbs, trouble breathing, and trouble swallowing.

Always use Escitalopram (Escitalopram Oxalate) as you have been prescribed by your doctor. Never self-medicate or change your dosage without first consulting your doctor. The correct dosage can vary depending on your health, medical history, and the severity of the condition being treated.

This medication may not be safe for all patients. Before you begin using it always disclose the following to your doctor:

  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • If you suffer from any allergies.
  • If you suffer from any other health conditions or illnesses.
  • If you are using any other medicine (including all non-prescription).
  • If you are using any supplements, vitamins, or herbal products of any kind.
