What is Acto-Pred (Methylprednisolone) used for?

Acto-Pred (Methylprednisolone) is a corticosteroid prescribed to treat patients suffering from asthma, arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, or allergic reactions. The medication prevents swelling and irritation to relieve the pain and discomfort of these symptoms. This action also makes it useful for treating patients with tuberculosis, lymphoma, or inflammatory eye disorders. Your physician may prescribe it for other unlisted conditions, as well.

How should I use Acto-Pred (Methylprednisolone)?

Acto-Pred (Methylprednisolone) is typically administered once or twice each day, but your particular directions will be determined by your physician after observing your health condition and the severity of your symptoms. These doses should be swallowed with a large glass of water along with a meal to prevent nausea. Never change the form of the tablets by crushing or splitting them before use as this may destroy or alter the effects of their contents. Ask your pharmacist or physician any questions you have about the medication to ensure the correct application.

What are the side effects of Acto-Pred (Methylprednisolone)?

Some patients using Acto-Pred (Methylprednisolone) have reported experiencing side effects such as:

  • Headaches
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Acne, sensitive skin, or dry skin
  • Insomnia
  • Increased sweating
  • Slower wound healing
  • Unusual swelling or weight gain

Inform your physician as soon as any symptoms become intense or if more serious side effects occur including depression, seizures, pancreatitis, low potassium levels, severe hypertension, vision problems, discolored stools, or coughing up blood. These may require immediate medical attention or changes to your dosage to prevent more problems from appearing.

Please Note

Do not begin using Acto-Pred (Methylprednisolone) if you have had a recent stroke, head injury, or if you have a widespread infection. Also inform your physician if you have liver cirrhosis, liver failure, inflammatory bowel disease, heart failure, epilepsy, osteoporosis, tuberculosis, glaucoma, an active ulcer, osteoporosis, herpes infection of the eye, diabetes, diverticulitis, clotting disorders, epilepsy, hypothyroidism, depression, low potassium levels, or if you are going through menopause. These conditions may cause unexpected complications requiring reduced dosages or other adjustments to your treatment.

Strictly follow all instructions provided to you by your physician or pharmacist while using Acto-Pred (Methylprednisolone). Optimum and safe dosage can differ based on the patient and the condition being treated.

As this medication may be unsafe for certain patients, it is essential you always inform your physician if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, as well as if you have any allergies, other illnesses, or ongoing health conditions, and if you are taking any other form of medication, supplements, or herbal products.

Immediately seek emergency medical care if you have an allergic or hypersensitive reaction. Common signs of a reaction include hives, swelling, skin rashes, chest pains, as well as trouble breathing or swallowing.
