What is Previcox (Firocoxib) used for?

Previcox is used in dogs with osteoarthritis or other joint conditions to help relieve pain and inflammation. a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAID) for dogs containing the active ingredient Firocoxib. Firocoxib can relieve pain and inflammation caused by with osteoarthritis or other joint complaints.

How should I use Previcox (Firocoxib)?

Previcox tablets are chewable. They can be given directly to your dog, or if you dog will not take the tablet like this you can hide it in their food.

Previcox is available in two different dosages:

  • a pack of 30 x 57mg tablets
  • a pack of 30 x 227mg tablets

In most cases the dosage for your dog will be based on body weight and prescribed at a dose of 5.0mg/kg daily (2.27mg/lb daily).

What are the side effects of Previcox (Firocoxib)?

Most NSAIDs cause some unwanted side effects. Digestive issues (particularly diarrhea, or black, tarry or bloody stools) are the most commonly reported side effects of firocoxib.

Previcox can also result in:

  • Skin irritation (redness, scabs, or scratching)
  • Unexpected weight loss
  • Change in behavior (decreased or increased activity level, poor coordination, seizure, or aggression)
  • Increase water consumption or urination changes (frequency, color, or smell)
  • Jaundice (yellowing of gums, skin or whites of eyes)

Let your vet know if you notice any of these in your dog.

Please Note

Some conditions will prevent your dog from be a good candidate for Previcox. Make sure your vet is aware if your dog has any of the folowing conditions:

  • allergy to aspirin or any other NSAID
  • ulcer or bleeding in the stomach
  • liver, or kidney disease
  • congestive heart failure
  • fluid retention
  • bleeding disorders
  • heart disease or high blood pressure

Previcox may also be unsuitable in pregnant or lactating dogs, or any any dogs taking a steroid medications (prednisone, methylprednisolone or prednisolone).
