What is Bactrim DS (Trimethoprim/Sulfamethoxazole) used for?

Bactrim DS (Trimethoprim/Sulfamethoxazole) is an oral antibiotic commonly prescribed to treat urinary tract infections caused by bacteria. The medication destroys or slows the reproduction of bacteria cells allowing the immune system to destroy the infection naturally. This action also makes it useful for treating infections of the urinary tract, ears, or kidneys. Your physician may prescribe it to treat other unlisted purposes, as well.

How should I use Bactrim DS (Trimethoprim/Sulfamethoxazole)?

Always use Bactrim DS (Trimethoprim/Sulfamethoxazole) according to the directions provided by your physician to ensure the safest and most effective results from treatment. One tablet is typically administered once or twice daily for a cycle of medication lasting one or two weeks, but your individual dosage and application frequency will be determined by the condition being treated, your current health, and the severity of your symptoms. These should be swallowed with a large glass of water one hour before a meal or two hours following a meal to ensure they are taken on an empty stomach. Do not stop taking the medication before being instructed to do so, even if your symptoms seem to have disappeared, as the infection may not be gone and can return strong or more resistant to treatment. Never crush, split, or chew the tablets before use to prevent unintentionally destroying or altering the effects of their contents. Ask your physician any questions you have regarding the medication to ensure the correct usage.

What are the side effects of Bactrim DS (Trimethoprim/Sulfamethoxazole)?

Some patients using Bactrim DS (Trimethoprim/Sulfamethoxazole) have reported experiencing side effects such as:

  • Upset stomach or diarrhea
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Swollen or sore tongue
  • Mild skin irritation or rash

Serious side effects that may require emergency medical attention are flu symptoms, severe headaches, sore throat, sensitive skin, easier bruising, muscle cramps, faintness, trouble breathing, or high potassium levels. Stop using the medication and contact your physician immediately if you experience any intense or worrying symptoms to make sure the correct alterations are made to your dosage or application frequency to prevent further problems from occurring.

Please Note

Bactrim DS (Trimethoprim/Sulfamethoxazole) should not be used to treat patients who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or who have abnormal blood cell counts. You are also suggested to inform your physician if you are elderly, at risk of folic acid deficiency, if the patient is a newborn baby, if you have porphyrias, decreased liver function, or decreased kidney function as these conditions may cause unexpected problems requiring special alterations to your regimen.

Strictly follow all instructions provided to you by your physician or pharmacist while using Bactrim DS (Trimethoprim/Sulfamethoxazole). Optimum and safe dosage can differ based on the patient and the condition being treated.

As this medication may be unsafe for certain patients, it is essential you always inform your physician if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, as well as if you have any allergies, other illnesses, or ongoing health conditions, and if you are taking any other form of medication, supplements, or herbal products.

Immediately seek emergency medical care if you have an allergic or hypersensitive reaction. Common signs of a reaction include hives, swelling, skin rashes, chest pains, as well as trouble breathing or swallowing.
