What is Sovaldi (Sofosbuvir) used for?

Sovaldi (Sofosbuvir) is a new antiviral medication prescribed to treat patients suffering from hepatitis C. It operates by preventing or slowing the reproduction of virus cells in the body allowing the immune system to control or prevent the spread of the infection. This action may also make it useful for treating some patients suffering from liver infections occurring as a result of HIV. Your physician may prescribe this medication for the treatment of other unlisted conditions, as well.

How should I use Sovaldi (Sofosbuvir)?

Always use Sovaldi (Sofosbuvir) strictly according to your physician's directions to get the safest and most effective results from treatment. The normal dosage is one daily dosage of one tablet, but your individual directions will be determined by your age, weight, health condition, and the severity of your symptoms. Most patients are prescribed a 12 week regimen, but some may require 24 weeks of treatment. These should be swallowed with a large glass of water and may be taken on an empty stomach, although a meal or snack is suggested prior to use if you experience nausea. Do not chew, split, or crush the tablets before taking them as this may destroy or change their effects. Ask your pharmacist or physician any questions you have about the medicine to ensure the correct usage.

What are the side effects of Sovaldi (Sofosbuvir)?

Some patients using Sovaldi (Sofosbuvir) may cause side effects in some patients including:

  • Headaches
  • Drowsiness
  • Mild nausea
  • Anxiety or insomnia
  • Mild irritation or itchiness

Stop using the medication and contact your physician as soon as possible if you experience pale or sensitive skin, faintness, irregular heartbeats, confusion, fever, flu symptoms, or swollen gums. These conditions may require lower doses, reduced administration frequency, or emergency medical attention in some cases to prevent further health problems from occurring.

Please Note

Do not begin using Sovaldi (Sofosbuvir) if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, allergic to sofosbuvir, if you have had a bad reaction to similar treatments in the past, or if you have severely reduced kidney or liver function. Also inform your doctor if you have reduced liver or kidney function or a history of liver disease as these conditions may cause unexpected complications requiring special adjustments to your treatment.

Strictly follow all instructions provided to you by your physician or pharmacist while using Sovaldi (Sofosbuvir). Optimum and safe dosage can differ based on the patient and the condition being treated.

As this medication may be unsafe for certain patients, it is essential you always inform your physician if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, as well as if you have any allergies, other illnesses, or ongoing health conditions, and if you are taking any other form of medication, supplements, or herbal products.

Immediately seek emergency medical care if you have an allergic or hypersensitive reaction. Common signs of a reaction include hives, swelling, skin rashes, chest pains, as well as trouble breathing or swallowing.
